Visited September 2012

These beautiful masks are by African Artist Romuald Hazoume, he started this series in the mid-1980's. The masks are made from discarded gasoline containers. Hazoume has said:

“I send back to the West that which belongs to them, that is to say, the refuse of consumer society that invades us every day.”

Hazoume's work focuses on the Beninese men who are forced to ferry contraband petrol between Nigeria and the Beninese consumers. In these and his photographic work he documents the diversity of African life today.
