ROMUALD HAZOUME

Mask by Romuald Hazoume-Manchester Art Gallery

Masks by Romuald Hazoume

The Land Between Us Contemporary Art from West Africa - Manchester Art Gallery
Visited September 2012

These beautiful masks are by African Artist Romuald Hazoume, he started this series in the mid-1980's. The masks are made from discarded gasoline containers. Hazoume has said:

“I send back to the West that which belongs to them, that is to say, the refuse of consumer society that invades us every day.”

Hazoume's work focuses on the Beninese men who are forced to ferry contraband petrol between Nigeria and the Beninese consumers. In these and his photographic work he documents the diversity of African life today.

Beautiful Sunset in Marple Bridge

This was taken late August from my window it feels like I have a different beautiful landscape painting outside my window every day, natural art, thankfully I manage to photograph them so I don't forget them and have evidence that they have been there.

Quote from the manifesto of the cloud appreciation society

A few images taken outside recently I am slightly obsessed with clouds and they are a regular feature in my photos.  I am hoping for my next present I will be receiving membership to the cloud appreciation society  http://cloudappreciationsociety.org , which I recently stumbled upon online.

Ceiling Lights

I captured these atmospheric images of my ceiling lights, I love the shadow and light.

ASTRONOMICAL
ASTRONOMICAL - Mishka Henner

My Birthday present a set of the Amazing ASTRONOMICAL by Mishka Henner a scale model of the solar system. It is a hands on visual interpretation of our solar system, each of the 6,000 pages represents a million kilometers.

New Scientist spoke to Henner :

Mishka Henner is an Artist living in Manchester he is known for his appropriation of images from Google earth, and Street View.

Mishka Henner's Less Americains sits next to Robert Frank's The Americans on my shelf

I also own Mishka Henners, Less Americains, where he erases 83 photographs from Robert Frank's photobook, The Americans. The book by Frank was first published in Paris, France and was called
Les Americains (The Americans).

In Henners book, which he described as a homage to Robert Rauchensberg and his drawing, Erased De  Kooning, he has erased parts of the images leaving shapes and textures which are beautiful and interesting in themselves. There has been a lot of controversy about the book, The Guardian's Sean O'Hagan described it as "either inspired or provocative-to-the point-of-insulting to the original".

A review by Jeffrey Ladd in Time magazine ended by evaluating the work in relation to Jack Kerouac's own words written in the 1958 introduction which accompanied the first US edition of Frank's book:

What poem this is, what poems can be written about this book of pictures some day by some young new writer high by candlelight bending over them describing every grey mysterious detail.

Einstein Quote at Manchester Museum

Went on a visit recently to Manchester Museum. My husband Andy is now studying MA in Museum and Art Gallery Studies at Manchester University and this term his lectures focus on Museum and it's contexts, so whilst he walked around answering questions he had been given t find the answers to, I enjoyed the African displays and the Experience displays. My favorite shown below.
